Re-live the Prohibition era with these two popular writers, whose new books both feature the larger-than-life characters of this period of history. Cole's first foray into non-fiction and Schultz’s new novel make a great STARFest combo as we step back in time with the facts and fiction of the era.

Award-winning journalist Trevor Cole surprised every right-thinking person in 2000 when he quit his full-time job at The Globe and Mail to write novels. Clearly a good decision as his first two books—Norman Bray in the Performance of His Life and The Fearsome Particles—were both nominated for the Governor General’s Literary Award and the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. The dark comedy Practical Jean won the Leacock Medal for Humour.

Cole’s latest book, The Whisky King, tells the intersecting story of two Italian Canadians: the biggest bootlegger of the Prohibition era, and the first undercover Mountie. Filled with original research and masterful storytelling, it is a riveting portrayal of a notorious criminal and the man who tried to bring him in.

Emily Schultz is a co-founder of the literary website Joyland: a hub for short fiction, host of the podcast Truth & Fiction, and creator of the blog Spending the Stephen King Money. Her 2012 literary thriller was The Blondes, a biting satiric examination of what happens in a world where beauty is deadly. It was named a best book of 2015 by the non-profit multimedia organization NPR and Kirkus.

Schultz’s new novel is Men Walking on Water. Set in the last years of Prohibition, it captures the champagne haze between expansion and collapse, between endings and beginnings. It is an epic story of a country torn between pleasure and abstinence.pelling collection of short stories filled with quirky characters and captivating descriptions of worlds both real and imagined.

Host Paula Simons is the award-winning city columnist with the Edmonton Journal. She is a regular and popular interviewer at STARFest.
